We need to begin describing the RedFox Basalt Climbing pants from their best feature: they are amazingly comfortable! From the first day we started wearing them, the fabric didn't need to adjust to our body types. We felt as if we had put on our best yoga pants, but disguised as casual khakis.
Their mix of fabrics (cotton with some spandex) makes them very soft and versatile. They are designed with a seamless, gusseted crotch, articulated knees and a wide elastic waistband, features that make them comfortable not only when you've gone climbing, but even when you have to ride a motorbike for several hours per day. They are not motorbike pants – no protections etc – but they proved to be just perfect for the very hot days on the road, combined with knee guards.
They are warm, but at the same time 100% breathable due to the cotton fabric, so ideal for mild climates (or for hot weather ON a motorbike). And with a good base layer, they can be also worn in colder climates.
For 15 months they were our main pairs of pants, which means almost everyday use (and abuse) and – as we've mentioned above – we used to wear them riding our scooter for endless hours under the scorching sun (detail we loved: they dry really quickly).
They are remarkably durable, too. There is some fading in their color, which is expected under the circumstances and after about 20 months of use (yes, we still wear them almost every day), in one of the two pairs' knee area the fabric has now become completely threadbare (men's). However, this doesn't mean that there is a question of quality. Any other pair of pants wouldn't have made it that far.
We are very satisfied with the Basalt Climbing pants. Highly recommended!
