New Year in Chile!

Rides, friends, celebrations, dinners, walks, adventures... We still don't understand how we managed to do so many things in the few days we spent in this part of Chile!

We first went to Puerto Montt in 2015 while heading south, so this time we didn't stay at all. As soon as the ferry from Chiloé dropped us off at the port, we headed straight for Frutillar, a small town 45km north, which we were about to see for the first time. Part of Frutillar stretches out on the shore of Lake Llanquihue, overlooking the impressive Osorno Volcano and while we were looking for the campsite we would spend the night, we passed through its picturesque streets. The city was founded in the 19th century by German settlers and its German identity was strongly reflected in every corner. The characteristics of many residents, the architecture, the food, but also the prices(!) sent us straight to Germany. So, after a night spent at the very ermm...rural campsite, we decided to continue.

Some months ago we had received a message from a Vespista, inviting us to his town, Valdivia. We had almost forgotten it after all this time, but just as we were looking at the map, thinking about where to go next, we saw Valdivia and remembered! So, we finally met with Javier, and the few days we spent with him in Valdivia region were 100% worth the detour. We did the 170km that separate Frutillar from Valdivia on Ruta 5, the highway and by afternoon we were just outside the city. At first we stayed in a campsite, but Javier soon told us that we were truly welcome to stay in his home.

Time flies when you're having fun, so we couldn't believe how fast the few days we spent in Valdivia with Javier passed. We did our Vespa rides together, drank our beers (and some nice “Terremoto” cocktails that Javier's mom made us), toured the city, went to Javier's students' guitar concert, learned about the history of Valdivia – which was almost completely destroyed from an earthquake in 1960 – but also about the Chilean social uprising that had just begun to subside with the promise of constitutional revision, we saw the sea lions relaxing in the harbor, went on a Vespa ride in the countryside, ate salmon al disco, talked and laughed with our hearts and when we left, we had a new friend in the South of Chile.

Next stop: Concepción. Try as we might, we can't remember details from the 500km ride from Valdivia to Concepción, but we certainly remember our Christmas experience in the Airbnb room we rented in haste and only looking at the budget factor. The cost of living in Chile is not low at all, so we had put our trip into "economy mode" and were trying hard to keep the budget under €50 per day. Somehow we found ourselves in a student's room in an apartment where three other students lived and – as expected – some of their friends who came and went. In fact, on Christmas day we found ourselves cleaning their house and cooking them fresh healthy food and feeling like we were the uncle and auntie who came to visit the nephews and help them a little with the chores!

There was another reason we were in Concepción that was not of course to do the laundry for some students. The last few months, we had been chatting online with a Mexican Vespa traveler with whom we wanted to meet but until then we had taken very different routes. Well, now for the first time we were really close, so there was no way we wouldn't meet. His scooter broke down and he was stuck in the area for weeks, trying to get it repaired. So we finally got to know Lalo Michel and his scooter, Adelita! When we finally left our student house, the couple who hosted him invited us to stay with them so that we could all celebrate the New Year together and that's exactly what we did. We found ourselves with great company, eating and laughing, having a really great time while we welcomed 2020 with enthusiasm!
