- We paid about $500 for fees & taxes when we bought the car new from Suzuki. The norary fee you'll need to pay will be much lower, because the vehicle is now used.

Good news: Paraguay is one of the most foreigner-friendly countries in South America when it comes to buying and registering a vehicle.
Can a Foreigner Buy & Register This Car?
Yes! And I speak from personal experience. When I bought this Jimny new, I did not have Paraguayan residency or a local Cédula ID card. I completed the entire purchase and registration process using only my valid passport. I received the Cédula Verde (official vehicle title) in my name without any issues.

What Do You Need to Buy This Car?
- Valid passport (not expired)
- Entry stamp showing you are legally in Paraguay
- Proof of address (a hotel receipt or rental agreement is usually sufficient)
That's it. No residency, no local ID, no RUC tax number, no local guarantor.
Can the Car Cross Borders?
Yes, without any restrictions. The car is registered in Paraguay and can freely enter neighboring countries including Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Bolivia, or any other country in the world. The MAPFRE PREMIUM insurance policy (the one we have) includes:
- Mercosur international coverage – valid in all neighboring countries
- Green Card (Carta Verde) – proof of insurance for border crossings
Whether you are the new owner or a foreign buyer, the vehicle faces no restrictions at land borders. You can drive it anywhere in South America or the rest of the world, without additional paperwork.
How Long Does the Transfer Take?
According to the official Dirección del Registro de Automotores, the transfer process takes approximately 4 business days from the date documents are submitted. Including notary preparation and document gathering, the entire process should take no more than 2 weeks from start to finish. We also waited only 2 weeks. A good opportunity to see Asuncion and the surrounding area!
